Sport and working hawks and falcons

Here are some photos of our favorite hawks. These are not mine, of course, but those of Meri Patni, the Raj Dulari. Back in her ancestral home in Kashmir, her family was famous throughout northern India for their trained hawks.

Meri Piari Patni was asked for a cup of tea, but she said that she was busy in the backyard.
Ah, the patience of a husband.

A female hawk

A harris hawk
The Harris's Hawk is now widely used in European towns to scare pigeons and starlings.
There have been recent (as of 2005) reports of escaped Harris Hawks breeding in the wild in England.
Many airports use falconers to scare these birds away from the land around runways and reduce the risk of birdstrikes on planes. Animal welfare issues aside, it is an interesting endevor. Falconers employed in these situations and in airports generally train their birds not to kill, but rather to drive and scare the birds away. John James Audubon gave this bird its English name in honor of his ornithological companion, financial supporter, and friend Edward Harris.
They are catagorised as "least concern" and do not qualify as threatened, nor near threatened.
This method of driving away birds is proven very effective at Rotterdam Airport and others.
Geese and gulls cause the most serious bird strike incidents. Other approaches try to scare away the birds using frightening devices, for example sounds, lights, pyrotechnics, radio-controlled airplanes, decoy animals/corpses, lasers, etc.

A gyrfalcon patrols New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Whether hawks are kept primarily for sport, subsistence hunting, or airport work, they are special creatures.

Kundalini Yoga Classes in Fort Lauderdale

Chanting, breathing, meditation and postures all work together in a class to awaken the energy at the base of the spine and draw it upward. However, this is a style where a trained teacher is highly recommended. In the classical literature of the Kashmir Shaivism Kundalini is described in three direct manifestations. Firstly, as the universal energy or para-kundalini. Secondly, as the energizing function of the body-mind complex or prana-kundalini. The third aspect is as consciousness or shakti-knudalini, which simultaneously subsumes and intermediates between these two.

The Outdoor Las Olas Boulevard Farmers Market is one of the beautiful locations for kudalini yoga classes.

Sadhana Kaur & Guru Jiwan Singh Khalsa, D.C.B.E.M., L.M.T., are now offering Classes in Kundalini Yoga & Individual Sessions in Skeletal Therapy as taught by Yogi Bhajan & Gatka Sikh Martial Art from India as taught by Ustad Nanak Dev Singh Khalsa as well as Certified Teacher & Practitioner Training, (only at 3901 S Ocean Dr, Hlwd), otherwise at the following locations:

Yoga & Gatka Classes
Cost: $60.00 per hr., (divided among students in class), payable at beginning of class.
Bring: A friend or Partner!, Yoga Mat, (available through us), oversized beach towel, wear loose fitting comfortable clothing,(preferably white cotton) an organic, vegetarian snack to share at the end of class.
you will need a yoga mat for these classes. the best mats are the ones made out of pure rubber. You can buy one at walmart, k mart, sports authority for half of the price that ours sell for but they are all made out of pvc which is a very toxic material which you do not want in your aura or lungs. Next class bring an oversized beach towel to put over your mat and bring drinking water. The mats cost $58.00, but the investment is well worth it as this will be the only investment that you will need to make for kundalini yoga except for a sheep skin which we can also get for you but that is not necessary right away. Also make sure that the beach towel is clean as you will be doing a lot of exercises face down with the breath of fire. When you do kundalini yoga at home make sure that you put a clean white sheet on the floor beneath your mat as well so that you will not be breathing in dust with your pranayama or breathing exercises. Our idea in charging for these classes is to charge $60.00 per hour. If we have two people then the cost is half of that amount. For three people it would be $20.00 and for four or more people it will cost $15.00 each and this is what we want to strive for every time we teach, to have at least 4 people in a class unless someone specifically wants an individual class. Ideally a class should be at least an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters which is what we find works best for a complete physical workout, relaxation and meditation. This is the technology of kundalini yoga. First we start with the postures and breathing exercises and after each exercise but no always there is a relaxation period to allow for the energy that you create to circulate throughout the body and for the healing effects of that exercise to take place. By the time you finish that Kriya (set of exercises & meditation ) that you have been practising as each Kriya has a different and pronounced body/mind/spirit effect, you will automatically be ready to meditate as you have raised the kundalini energy,(consciousness and awareness) up the spine so that you are by this time in a meditative state of mind. In Tantric Numerology we call this the Neutral or Yogic mind , the 4th spiritual body.

Once you get inspired to start practising kundalini yoga at home which could take a few months depending on how many classes you attend per week, you will start seeing some very positive differences in your life. Relationships, both business and personal start improving as your intuition starts becoming more pronounced and your awareness and consciousness starts to rise. The increased happiness, joy and peace of mind create an amazing difference in the way you feel and how you interact with people. You will be come more outgoing as you will want to share your rising spirit with others. . One of the side benefits and reasons for practising kundalini yoga is that you will start to store prana, the life force at your navel point. This is like going to the bank at the beginning of the week and drawing out money that you will need for the rest of the week. Practising kundalini yoga creates prana at the navel so that it will be stored there until you need it. Once your energy gets low the pranic body kicks in and starts pumping energy into your veins. Whenever a patient goes to the doctor and complains of low energy , the doctor mistakenly will always diagnose the patient with weak adrenal glands, which is total misdiagnosis. The adrenal glands may be affected but it is not the root cause. The doctor will then advise the patient to do diaphragmatic breathing which is what strengthens the pranic body. The root cause of low energy is the pranic body or what we call in Tantric Numerology, the 8th spiritual body. If the pranic body, (diaphragm, solar plexus area) is weak, your energy is low. Practising Kundalini Yoga develops prana, life force in your body which gives you the energy to be positive, healthy, happy, outgoing and teaches you to conserve energy so that you do not waste it on useless pursuits
. Yogis have used animal skins for thousands of years to do yoga and meditate on because they neutralize the pull of the earth's gravity when you meditate. Not only do you liberate the soul of the animal by meditating on its skin but you also can achieve much higher states of meditation as there is nothing to hold your soul down as it travels during meditation. There are so many other positive benefits of sheep skin. Ideally you want to use your sheepskin only for meditation and yoga but they are also great to sleep on and sit on while you drive your car, fly in a plane, or just relax in your easy chair. They are used in hospitals for bedridden patients to prevent bed sores. Sheep skins allow the skin to breathe as there is a space between you and the skin created by the wool which allows an air flow which keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer and when you drive long distances there is nothing like a sheepskin to keep you comfortable to allow proper circulation. Kundalini yoga is a spiritual journey or path which starts with your first class. Once you get started, the only limitations that you will experience will come from your past and practising Kundalini yoga helps you to relate to the present so that you can take advantage of all of the wonderful opportunities that have always been there and that are always coming your way but that we were never conscious or aware of because of the limitations of our past which we all tend to hold on to. Kundalini Yoga is the Yoga of Awareness and Consciousness and we look forward to sharing all that we have learned with you!

Guru Jiwan Singh Khalsa will be doing Kundalini Yogic Bodywork at the market also.
For the yoga classes you need to bring:

An exercise mat,(which you can purchase from us:)
Two sheets, (preferably white cotton), one to be put over your mat, and one to cover yourself during the relaxation and meditation sequence of the class.
Wear loose comfortable clothing, (also preferably white cotton),
Drinking water.

Las Olas also sponsors the Wine & Food Festival, Art Festival, Home & Garden Show, and a Marathon.

Expo of Heart - Broward Convention Center

In recent years, people are taking responsibility for their own health and well being. The health and wellness industries are integrating; creating acceptance of more alternative health and healing modalities. The broward show today was interesing as always.
I received a "skin carotenoid score" laser scan. (was at the top of the range)
Many other new products and vendors were there.
It shows the effects of your diet for the last 4 months. You put your hand in front of this laser device for 90 seconds, and they give you the printout. The scan was $10 and entrance to the expo was $20. Parking is extra, but I cheat and park 3 blocks west, and take a nice walk. If you enter on foot, you must show a drivers licence to security.

The Expo of Heart provides a venue to showcase new cutting-edge products and services.

Kestrals

Kestrel is the name used to describe several different types of the falcon genus, Falco.

American Kestrels (along with the Red-tailed Hawk) are one of two raptors almost universally used by new (apprentice) falconers in the United States. The American Kestrel is generally considered to be a harder bird to care for due to its small size, quick metabolism, and fragile nature (in comparison with the much larger Red-tail and other raptors used in falconry) and requires extensive weight management, often within a couple tenths of a gram. The pictures that follow are the inititation of training and observation. At this stage it is jumping 2 meters. It is a bird born in captivity and created for this falconer.

albino redtail hawk

Complete albinism in birds, when the feathers, skin and eyes are all without pigment, is very rare to find. In such cases, the eyes are usually red or pink and the legs, feet and bill are white or very pale. It is extremely difficult for such birds to survive in the wild because they tend to stand out as prey, lacking any natural camouflage. Even an albino red-tailed hawk would be much more visible at night and subject to predation by great horned owls.

What is falconry?

Falconry is the sport (some would say of hunting game with a raptor ”a bird of prey. At its core, falconry is acclimating a bird of prey to hunt within the presence and sometimes with the assistance of one or more human beings.

Falconry has been practiced for at least 2,000 years. Originating in Asia, falconry was initially just a means of getting an extra bit of meat for dinner. Later, in Europe and the Middle East, falconry became associated with royalty. Hunting with falcons eventually fell out of favor with the invention of firearms.

Here in the United States, modern falconry is practiced by people of all walks of life though there are fewer than 4,000 licensed falconers in the US.

Contact information:

What should I do if I find an injured or baby raptor?

Call a local zoo or your state wildlife agency for assistance. They will help you to get care for the bird's or other wildlife.

Never try to pick up an injured bird of prey as it will almost certainly defend itself and hurt you.

Are raptors dangerous?

In the wild, raptors are shy,and fear people, and will avoid them at all costs unless humans intrude upon their nesting territory or attempt to help a wounded bird. You are not likely to ever get close to a wild bird of prey.

Raptors used in falconry are acclimated to having people closer to them and working with at least one person—the falconer that has invested a large amount of time training, hunting, and caring for the bird. Sometimes falconry birds are fine around other people and strangers, too.

Unlike wild raptors, people can potentially get very close to a trained raptor before the bird's fight-or-flight instinct is triggered. If this instinct kicks in when a person is within striking distance, a raptor may try to defend itself.

Worried? Dont be! If you give a falconry bird a respectful distance and dont try to touch it, you wont have any problems at all.

Does your bird like you?

Birds of prey do not really develop an attachment to falconers, certainly nothing like a dog or cat might. Raptors tend to just tolerate falconers.

Falconry birds do often associate falconers with three things: (1) Someone who brings food, (2) someone who helps in hunting in order to get food, and (3) someone how helps to get caught food under control. The way to a raptors heart is through its stomach!

Where can I get more information about falconry?

Contact your states wildlife agency, check out the North American Falconers Association (www.n-a-f-a.org), or contact a local falconer with the information provided below.

How do I become a falconer?
In order to become a falconer, you will need to do the following things:
Be over 14 years old.
Contact your states wildlife division and get in touch with the person in charge of falconry-related activities.
Have them send you an information packet, a copy of the state and federal falconry laws, and contact information for any nearby falconers.
Contact nearby falconers and find someone to take you in as his or her apprentice for at least two years.
Read, study, and cram for a falconry test. You need over 80% to get a falconry license.
Buy and/or make your falconry equipment and construct a housing facility. All items must then pass a state inspection.
Get a hunting permit and any other permits your state requires.
Contact your state wildlifes falconry director to make sure you have all the permits and written authorizations needed prior to trapping a bird. (Each state has different rules on what is required and what is not.)
Build a trap and go trap yourself a bird!

Over the next two years (or more), youll be an apprentice under another falconer, who will help guide you through the trapping, training, hunting, and care of your raptor. After two years, if youre over 18, you can upgrade from an apprentice falconer to a general falconer. After 5 years of flying raptors as a general falconer you can upgrade to a master falconer.

What kinds of birds can I fly?

During your first two years as an apprentice, you can fly a red-tailed hawk or an American kestrel.

A red-tailed hawk is a large and sturdy raptor capable of taking all kinds of game in all kinds of environments, but is particularly suited for ground quarry like squirrels and rabbits. The bird of choice for new falconers is almost always the easy-going, steadfast red-tailed hawk.
The robin-sized kestrel is the smallest North American falcon and is used by falconers to primarily hunt insects and small non-game birds (sparrows and starlings). Kestrels are very challenging first birds and generally avoided as first birds unless circumstances absolutely prohibit the use of a red-tail or the falconer sponsoring the apprentice has a wealth of experience with kestrels..
After your apprenticeship is over, you can fly a much large variety of hawks and falcons.

Is falconry expensive?

It can be incredibly expensive or not too expensive. If you trap your bird, make most of your own equipment, don't have to drive to hunting grounds, and can catch enough game so that you don’t need to buy food for your bird, you could potentially spend less than $500 getting started. On average, most falconers will probably spend $1,000 or more per year on each bird, all things considered (like gas and wear and tear on vehicles getting to and from hunting grounds). However, falconry’s real expense is time.

How much time does falconry take up?
Taking up falconry is like taking on a second part-time job that requires about 10-20 (or more) hours of work each week.

Falconers need to take each bird out hunting usually at least twice a week during the hunting season for at least a few hours each trip though some high-energy birds need to be flown five or more days each week.

There is more to having a raptor than just hunting. Daily care, food preparation, weight management, and cleaning the mews (housing facility) are critical to having a healthy raptor. You have to do this all year round not just the hunting season.

Do you hunt with your bird?

Absolutely! Falconry is defined as hunting with a bird of prey. In fact, in order to possess a raptor for falconry purposes, you are required by law to hunt with it. Hunting helps to keep the bird in shape both physically and mentally, and it is exactly what theyd be doing in the wild. The only difference between a falconry bird and a wild bird's hunting styles is that the falconry bird has learned to accept the presence of a human.

Falconry birds almost universally catch less game than their wild counterparts. That's because a falconry bird can only hunt when the falconer takes it hunting. A wild raptor is effectively hunting from dawn to dusk unless it's an owl!
Contrary to popular belief, raptors do not bring their kills back to the falconer. They generally just hunker down to eat it. Some birds will even try to hide in brush or fly off with their food because they have absolutely no intention of sharing!

It kills other animals?
Yes. Raptors are meat-eaters and cannot survive by eating anything else. In order to stay healthy, a raptor needs the whole animal, fur, bones, and all!
A raptor used in falconry is doing exactly what it would do in the wild, just doing it in the presence of a human.

Kundalini Yoga Therapy

Our Gift to you this Holiday Season from: Health And Happiness Org. / Guru Arjan Dev Ashram

Skeletal CyMa)))ssage Kundalini Yoga Therapy, (SCMKYT)
"SKELETAL THERAPY is thousands of years old and has saved the lives of thousands of people. ONE TREATMENT completely destresses the body, balances the meridians and adjusts the bones and ELEVEN TREATMENTS completely rebuild the body."- Yogi Bhajan
Skeletal Therapy is a full body yogic massage modality that comes from the technology of 3HO Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, our spritual teacher. There are 8 different areas of the body that we work on which take 10-11 minutes each. The full body treatment of Skeletal Therapy takes 90 minutes.

CYMA(((SSAGE is a form of CYMATICS AND BIO ENERGETIC MEDICINE as taught by Dr. Sir Peter Guy Manners, PH.D., M.D., D.O., for which we use a digital computer to rebalance the harmonic frequencies of the cells of any structure of the body which will improve any condition by relaxing the structure, thus releasing the stress which will allow the body to heal itself. Pure Sound, no side effects, safe, soothing, relaxing, scientific and used by medical doctors around the world. "Tomorrow's medicine for today's people. No drugs, no side effects, no contra indications, a scientific application of a natural form of healing. For far too long man has applied and administered harmful and destructive methods of treatment to his system and body. Cymatic Therapy works hand in hand with the natural process of the body, renewing and revitalizing the natural healthy bodies. A method of transplant, not of an organ, but of the energy and life force that holds and keeps that organ or structure in health and vitality."-Dr. Manners

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A TREATMENT: FREE CONSULTATION. We will first do your TANTRIC NUMEROLOGY from your birthday to help us determine your strengths and weaknesses which will help us to understand better how to serve you. We will then ask you specific questions regarding any pain or physical/mental complaint that you have, previous treatments, medications, previous diagnosis from a doctor, then offer our diagnosis and recommended CYMATICS & BIO ENERGETIC MEDICINE Commutation (treatment) which usually takes about 30 minutes. Then we will offer you 5 minutes of a hand held vibrational massage unit and then start with Manual Medicine. Please bring loose comfortable (preferably white) cotton clothing if you prefer to be treated over your clothing, drinking water & a healthy snack. MASSAGE THERAPY, will be then offered to the designated area, (usually we start with the back) and then we will begin SKELETAL THERAPY.

"MASSAGE THERAPY is the oldest and largest system of Natural Therapy. Its value has been recognized from the earliest days of history to the present time not only by drugless therapists but the medical professional as well. Massage Therapy is a scientific treatment by certain passive systematic manipulations upon the human body, with the main object being promoting and maintaining a balanced circulation. The effect of Massage Therapy is manifold. While it is apparent that one effect is to relax the muscles, Massage Therapy also sets the blood in circulation, throws off toxins which have accumulated, stimulates nerve activity, increases lung activity, quiets and soothes the nervous system, breaks up deposits in the joints, etc. it is not the blood flow alone which is aided by massage therapy. The lymphatic circulation is also stimulated to greater activity. In many chronic pathological conditions tissue activity is greatly interfered with and results in accumulations of toxins (poisons or waste matter) in the system since the cells, being deprived of their proper amount of oxygen, are unable to perform their excretory functions perfectly. Cellular interchange is aided by properly applied Massage Therapy. The work of the tissues is greatly promoted and proper nutrition to the tissues is secured." -Dr. Hari Jot Singh Khalsa,Ph.D.

Kundalini Yoga is the art and science to uncoil the locked Knowledge of happiness. Kundalini Yoga is the art and the science to stimulate the body into an energy where the intuitiveness can go and catch up with the frequency of the infinite and restore the infinite acknowledgement of trust, again, again, again."-Yogi Bhajan

"Gatka brings to a human being those facilities of fulfillment, success, and excellence. Gatka is a martial art; it is a science. "Gat" sometimes spelled "Gut" means grace, liberation, respect in your power, your good will. "Ka" means, that of , or one who belongs. Therefore Gatka means, one whose freedom, sovereignty and liberty belongs to grace. it is an art of self-defense which makes a person graceful. It is not only a defense art, but a totality of the definition of human fulfillment, human essence, and human grace. it is a martial art that makes a person fearless, makes a person revengeless, makes a person able to concentrate. Every movement is scientifically originated, organized and projected. This is a discipline in which there is nothing but success. However, it does need practise. It needs dedication, it needs devotion, and it needs time. But those who spend time to keep up in this art and science will understand the art of life, the art of success, the art of excellence, the art of grace. That is what Gatka means."-Yogi Bhajan.

Kundalini Yogic Bodywork Techniques are explained at our website and thoughout this blog. It is an ancient and powerful technique.
